The Income Tax Department was established in January 1924, and is governed by the Income and Business Tax Act Chapter 55 of the Laws of Belize Revised Edition 2000.
The mission of the Department is the Maximization of revenue collection and the main objectives are:

To administer the Income and Business Tax Act

To determine and collect taxes for various categories of taxpayers including Individuals, sole traders, companies, partnerships, trusts, etc.

To administer the P.A.Y.E. system including the verification and preparation of refunds

To conduct tax investigations

To provide assistance to the public in completion of forms and other related documents

To advise Government on tax policy

To collect statistical data in respect of Income and Business Tax
A Commissioner and a staff of eighty-seven (87) officers countrywide presently man the Department. There are five main sections within the Department; they are the Assessment, Administration, Collection, Compliance and Technical sections. The Department was decentralized in 1983 with the establishment of district offices in three of the main towns. Each of these offices function similar to the Head Office and is responsible for dealing with all tax matters relating to two districts within its area, i.e. Corozal Office for Corozal and Orange Walk Districts; Belmopan Office for Cayo District; and Dangriga Office for the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts.
